So this weekend is Lost Weekend, a fan planned charity event for ABC's Lost. Last night was a pre-party with the actual Charity Auction and Dinner tonight, where a lot of the production/writing staff and some of the cast will likely appear.

Last night was also a Bowling competition, Bowl-a-polooza 3, between fans of two of the producers/writers, Bryan Burke & Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who now works for Medium.

Javier came to join the fun and brought a friend along with him, actor Mark Sheppard. While Sheppard has never been on Lost before he has been on Firefly, Medium, and recently Battlestar Galatica (Don't talk about it I'm not there yet!!!)

Here's a Picture of Mark Sheppard, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, and myself.

I've asked a few of my friends to send me reviews of movies they've seen, so look for some Guest Reviews and Second Opinions appearing here occasionally. And Here with the first review is my friend Matt Kalish, with a review of the film "One Night with the King"

One Night with the King

Starring: Tiffany Dupont, Luke Goss and John Rhys-Davies

What’s it about: This film is a fascinating and refreshing retelling of the Biblical story of Esther. The film stars relatively unknown Tiffany Dupont as the Jewish girl Hadassah who takes the name Esther to hide her true heritage in a politically charged time of the Persian Empire. King Xerxes is played majestically by British pop star Luke Goss. The film holds Lord of the Rings qualities in it epic grandeur and thematic overtones. Additional the film stars two Lord of the Rings actors with John Noble playing the twisted Prince Admantha and John Rhys-Davies as the Jewish Leader and royal scribe Mordecai. This film holds power in its touching look at King Xerxes and his constant challenge to find balance between his legacy and what he knows in his heart is right.

What did I think: I found this film to be a wonderful film that captured the story of Esther very well.

Why you should see it: Written by Omega Code screenwriter and a former UCLA football player, Stephen Blinn, this movie belongs in most households. It captures the intrigue and subtle outlines of a brutal empire without forcing the images upon the viewer.

So Apparently I'm not the only person out there that's disgusted with the CW and the fact that they've replaced the best show on TV, AKA Veronica Mars, with the lowest form of entertainment around, The Search for the Next Pussycat Doll. (The saddest fact is that Search is doing better in the ratings than Veronica, Why Are You People Watching This Trash!?!?!?!)
But Dean Trippe, a fantastic Artist, has drawn up this wonderful piece of art, depicting Veronica Knocking out one of the pussycat dolls. Hope You Enjoy.

So a couple of weeks ago there was a lunar eclipse and I think that I got some Super Powers from it a la Heroes. Unfortunately it would appear that the powers I gained were the Powers of the Sloth, which sadly is the power to have no motivation to do anything whatsoever. So I've done little to nothing on my Script since the first night (although that did get a 2 page outline and the first 3 pages of the script), I've done almost nothing on this blog, and basically last week on my week off I spent it watching TV and playing the Wii (although more watching TV than anything) The only good thing to come of this, for me anyways, was that I saw two new movies and Finished the first season of Battlestar Galactica.
But now on with the Reviews. Let's start with some mini-reviews and then hit a couple of bigger reviews.

Music & Lyrics
Stars: Hugh Grant & Drew Barrymore
What's it About: Hugh Grant is an 80s Pop Star who's career has hit a new low. Luckily for him the new "It" girl (think Britney Spears and Shakira rolled into one) loves his 80s band and wants him to write her a new hit duo for the two of them. Grant has had trouble writing for years ever since the band split up and now is no different. But then he meets Barrymore a natural song writer with no clue of her talent. What follows is your typical rom-com.
What did I think: All in all a cute, albeit predictable, "Chick-Flick" makes for a great date movie. But I should also note that the screening we went to served alcohol before the film, which may have made it funnier. But if you do go see this stay through the credits to watch the "Pop-up Video" version of the 80s video it's quite enjoyable.
Why You Should See It: Because it's light, happy, and a great date flick. Just don't think you're getting anything more than that.

Because I Said So
Starring: Mandy Moore, Diane Keaton, Tom Everett Scott
What's it about: Mothers and Daughters and learning to let go.
What did I think: All in all a cute, albeit predictable, "Chick-Flick" makes for a great date movie. But alas no alcohol before this one, so maybe it could have been better. But really it was a good date movie.
Why You Should See It: Because it's light, happy, and a great date flick. Just don't think you're getting anything more than that.

Number 23
Starring: Jim Carrey, Virginia Madsen
What's it about: Madsen buys her husband, Jim Carrey, a book that she thinks he will like. Carrey begins to read this book, about a man's obsession with the number 23, and thus becomes a man obsessed with the number 23. The film follows as the number begins to take over his life.
What did I think: It was alright. It was enjoyable, but the ending felt off, and it didn't live up to my hopes. Since it was a Joel Schumacher film, I was already weary but I was hoping that this would be good Schumacher (A Time to Kill) and not bad Schumacher (Batman & Robin), it was somewhere in the middle. It wasn't terrible, but it was not what I had been hoping for.
Why You Should See It: This is a good question. If you like thrillers and you like Jim Carrey, you might want to see it. But as I said, the ending left me wanting more, and seemed almost too easy. So maybe you shouldn't see it.

Zodiac
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, & Robert Downey Jr.
What's it about: The true story of the Zodiac Serial Killer. This is based on the books by Robert Graysmith (Gyllenhall) a cartoonist for the San Fransisco Chronicle who become enthralled in the Zodiac case and took it upon himself to try and solve it. The movie focuses on both Graysmith and Paul Avery (Downey Jr.), the investigative reporter assigned the story as they try to gain more clues, but also on Inspectors David Toschi (Ruffalo) and Inspector William Armstrong (Edwards) as they try to solve the case themselves.
What I Thought: I loved it. I was worried going in that it was going to be a gory horror film, but instead I was pleasantly surprised to find a very well made drama. Gyllenhall does a great job carrying much of the film as Graysmith. Graysmith becomes obsessed with solving these murders and finding the killers, for reasons which are not really explained, and Gyllenhall does a great job of conveying this spiral into obsession. Ruffalo too does a great job as Toschi, the real life inspiration for Dirty Harry, as a man who wants to solve this horrific case, but eventually just wants to put it all behind him.
My Movie Going Experience: I have to say that this might be the most scared I have ever been, not of a movie, but of one of my fellow movie goers. I went to an early showing of this with about 40 other people in the theater. Yet even with so few people one guy decided he must sit right next to me (Ok 4 seats down, but still there's whole aisles without people on them!!!! And I was sitting on the end, nowhere near the middle) Well the movie starts and there is a murder (I promise this isn't giving anything away) and a call to 911 is played saying there's been a double murder and where it is and ends with the caller saying "And I Killed Them." And the guy next to me laughs. But he doesn't just laugh, he laughs as loud as I believe is humanly possible. He laughs so loud everyone, and I mean Everyone in the theater turns around or looks down to look at this guy. It was creepy, who laughs at something like that? I looked over and thought if he wasn't so young (Mid 30s) I'd believe he was the Zodiac. But he didn't stop, he just kept laughing at inappropriate moments. And then it got worse, he started laughing while snapping his fingers very wildly and loudly, it was obnoxious and distracting. Finally after about 30 min of this I decided to move. The triggering event was when he started laughing during the second set of murders. I'm sorry but these scenes are tense, dramatic, and disturbing and I firmly believe anyone laughing at that has severe mental issues. So I got up moved to the complete other side of the theater and tried to ignore his laughter and snapping.
Why You Should See It: Because it really is an intriguing, enthralling murder mystery. Don't let the fact that the murders remain officially unsolved keep you from seeing this. As far as the murders go, while the scenes can be disturbing, most of the violence (not all but most) takes place off screen, which is quite a relief. Truly a very good mystery/drama that enthralls. Plus I'm always a fan of getting more for your money and this movie clocks in at over 2.5 hours, so thats half an hour to an hour longer than most movies.

I'll be posting reviews of The Host and 300 soon.

So I went to WWLA this weekend and today I met Tim Kring the creator of NBC's smash hit Heroes As I was talking to Tim, very briefly, I told him that I loved the show and they were doing a great job to which he replied "If you've liked it so far, just wait until we come back in April" and said the remaining episodes would be amazing.
Also while standing there I over heard him tell Zachary Quinto, who plays the villainous Sylar, that he would be receiving the script tonight for Episode 23! So their getting close to filming the last few episodes, as 22 is the normal end for a season (but NBC asked for a few extra episodes).
I also spoke with Mr. Quinto, who was very nice, and James Kyson Lee, who plays Ando, the Dean Martin to Hiro's Jerry Lewis (As Jeph Loeb, one of the head writers, put it in the Heroes panel on Saturday) who was also as nice as could be.
I also got my Teen Wolf/Teen Wolf Too DVD signed by both Jeph Loeb, who co-wrote the original, and Tim Kring, who wrote the sequel.
My friend Jonathan went with me as well and I got the chance to introduce him to my friend (at least I think of him as my friend) Javier Grillo-Marxuach, a writer/producer formally of Lost currently of Medium. Javi was wonderful as always and I look forward to bowling with him in a couple of weeks at the Lost fan event.
But the highlight of the Convention was meeting Kristen Bell. On Saturday I was able to met Kristen and get an autograph and a picture taken with her (You can find it below!) She was very, very nice and as beautiful in person as she is on TV (Although she can't hold a candle to my wife.) I'm just hoping I'll get to see more of her on a 4th season of Veronica Mars next year (please CW don't break my heart).
That's all for now.

Some of our Friends need your prayers.
Our friends from back in Amarillo, Brad & Jordan, really need your prayers. Several years ago Jordan had stomach cancer and her stomach had to be removed. Today they found out that Jordan has a spot on her liver and a spot on her lung and some internal bleeding.
She is currently in the hospital having tests run to see if there are anymore spots. And tonight she's being flown to Dallas to start treatment.
To make matters worse last Wednesday Jordan gave birth to a little girl, Phoebe.
Their family needs your prayers as they have a son and a brand new little girl. Please ask God to heal Jordan and be with the rest of the family through this tough time.
Thanks,
Travis and Jeri

So I promise you new blogs are coming soon! I've been busy between school, my unpaid internship, my side job doing some legal research for a friend, and looking for a paid job for now and this summer. Plus trying to play the Wii and as of tonight starting to write a script.
That's right I've started writing a script (we'll see how long this lasts) but I keep thinking about this script I want to write and decided it was time to stop thinking about it and actually do it.

So if you look to the left you'll see there are a few new movies on the list, so I'll have reviews of those coming soon. I'm also working on a blog called "Flashback Friday" which I'll try to make a semi-regular item, which will take a look back at movies over 15 (or 20) years old. First up is the Back to the Future Trilogy, I've been working on it for awhile, but twice now my computer has shut down while I was typing it and lost most of the blog, so it's coming soon. (hopefully by this Friday, but I can't promise that)
Also look for a column where in I take a look at supposedly horrible movies to see how they really stack up. The first movie for this will be what some call one of the worst movies of all time, and a huge disappointment. I don't want to say anymore because I want it to be a surprise.
Also coming up is a blog about the current state of movie theaters in this country, and I will take a look at some classics.
