The Rocker starring Rainn Wilson hits stores today on DVD and Blu-ray, but I got to check out an advanced copy over the weekend. Now the movie didn't do great when it came out in theaters and kind of just came and went, but I think that has a lot to do with all the comedy competition which came out about the same time, including Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express. But I think The Rocker is worth your time as it's both pretty dang funny, but also has some awesome music as well.

Wilson stars as Robert "Fish" Fishman who was unceremoniously kicked out of his band, Vesuvius. (Will Arnett, Fred Armisen, and Bradley Cooper) Now it's 20 years later and while Vesuvius is the number 1 band in the country, Fish is a jobless, single washout living in his sisters tiny attic. But as luck would have it Fish's nephew Matt (the hilarious Josh Gad) and his band mates (Emma Stone and Teddy Geiger) are in need of a drummer for their gig playing prom.

From there to movie has the band, A.D.D., getting millions of hits on YouTube when an internet practice gets leaked online. (Fish doesn't exactly understand webcams and practices in the nude and the "Naked Drummer" becomes a phenomenon.) Along the way the band has some fun, some fights, and of course a run in with Vesuvius.

The movie is pretty basic, and anyone can see what's coming. But it's got some great music (supplied by Geiger who is an actual musician, and it's mostly his music in the movie) and quite a few hilarious scenes. Wilson of course is better known as Dwight K. Schrute on NBC's The Office and he brings some of those quirks with him to Fish, but he also adds a dash of 80s rock to the mix, and whereas Dwight is always over the top, Fish has an actual heart and he does a great job making you feel for the guy.

Stone does a good job playing the only girl in the band and is a lot like the other two characters she's played on the big screen in Superbad and The House Bunny. Geiger does a good job in his first movie role (he was previously on the short lived series Love Monkey) but it's his voice that really won him the role.

But the standout in the cast is Josh Gad. Previously seen as the station manager on Fox's Back to You, Gad steals pretty much every scene he's in with his dry delivery and heavy dose of sarcasm. He reminds me a lot of Jonah Hill, which is not a bad thing.

All in all The Rocker is not a bad way to spend a couple of hours. And the DVD has some great extras. I highly recommend the deleted scenes, which include a great bit with "The 5th Beatle" Pete Best. YOu can see the complete list of bonus features below:

* Commentary with director Peter Cattaneo and actor Rainn Wilson
* Commentary with actors Josh Gad, Teddy Geiger, Emma Stone and Jason Sudeikis
* 10 Deleted Scenes
* Gag Reel (including separate options of “Matt Gags” and “Vesuvius Gags”)
* Rainn Wilson: Office Rocker featurette
* Pete Best Interview featurette
* Behind The Band: Vesuvius featurette
* Rock Beat With Fish Fishman featurette
* The Music of The Rocker featurette
* Rock Tales featurette
* MTV Film Festival Panel
* Fox Movie Channel Presents…In Character With The Rocker
* “I’m Not Bitter” music video
* Four exclusive podcasts

The Rocker hits streets today, so go pick it up and let me know what you think.

I just finished watching an amazing video, John August's The Remnants. August is a well known screenwriter (Go, Big Fish, Corpse Bride, he's a goto for Tim Burton) and he Directed the mindbending film The Nines starring Ryan Reynolds.

Over the break caused by the Writers' Strike he created and shot The Remnants, about a group, including Justine Bateman, Ernie Hudson, Michael Cassidy, Ben Falcone, and Ze Frank, who are trying to survive after an apocalyptic event has killed off most of mankind.

August has posted the entire 11 minute pilot via Vimea but I've posted it below. If you want to watch it in HD simply click on the Vimeo logo in the bottom right corner of the video.

The video is very intriguing and leaves you wanting more, something we may or not get, but it is being shopped around right now. So watch below and let me know what you think.

The Academy Awards Nominations came out today and as expected Heath Ledger was nominated for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight. Its especially bitter sweet since today is the 1st anniversary of his tragic death.
I think the biggest shock is that The Dark Knight was not nominated for Best Picture. It marks only the 4th time that a film was nominated for best picture by all three guilds (Producer, Writer, Director) and not by the Academy. It would seem that it's spot was taken by the Reader which has been getting more buzz over the past few months. I myself will be rooting for Slumdog Millionaire to continue it's hot streak and take home the award, as it's probably my favorite film of the past year.

Last week I was able to sit in on a conference call interview with the great Bruce Campbell, who plays Sam Axe on the hit USA series Burn Notice. I got a chance to ask Bruce a couple of questions as well as listen to him answer some other great questions for about an hour. Below I've posted a bit of the interview. Burn Notice returns Tonight at 10/9 c.

The CineManiac: Thanks for talking with us today. You’ve been on a several shows that have only lasted one season. How does it feel to be back on a show that has not only been picked up for a third season but is a hit with viewers and critics alike?

Bruce Campbell: Ask yourself the same question: How would you feel? You feel good. I just learned that people like me in small doses. So whenever I’m not the star, like with Hercules & Zena, the shows run for six years, so I’m good. This show will be on the air forever because I’m not the star of it, so it worked out fine. It feels good to be part of a hit show, though, too. Honestly. The crew, any of them I think are very grateful to know these are people who work harder than any actor. They’re busting themselves 14, 16 hours a day and it’s nice to know that it’s a hit show. Because sometimes you do that and the show’s a dog and it gets cancelled.

The CineManiac: I was actually able to attend the Premiere of My Name is Bruce here in Austin. It was wonderful. Are you planning on directing anything else soon?

Campbell: I can answer that question after February 10th when the DVD comes out. Then I’ll know if anybody’s watching what I do. As you know, it’s economically driven. I would like to and I’m hoping to do another movie in the fall of this year.

And now for some of the other bloggers questions:

Q: How much creative input do you have with your character for the show?

Campbell: Well, every situation is different and Burn Notice is very structured. Matt Nix, it’s his show, it’s his concept, it’s his idea. So when I came on board, I’m going to give smaller stuff. You know, I might ad lib some stupid joke at the end of a scene or whatever. Or I might suggest a tone of maybe treat Michael’s mother more gently at some point. So it’s really for me mostly smaller stuff; the captain of the ship is Matt Nix and he’s also allowing us to think through scenes and if we want to throw in a line or so, he doesn’t have a problem with that. But I never show up on a set going, “Man, I got to ad lib today.”

Q: Are you at all surprised about how successful it has been?

Campbell: I’m surprised by everything these days because you never know. My basis for accepting this script when it came across my desk was I loved the fact of what it wasn’t. It wasn’t a cop show, it wasn’t a doctor’s show, it wasn’t a lawyer show. There’s plenty of stuff that goes on, but this is basically the human side of spies and I went, right, I can get into that. And I really enjoyed the fact that it’s a good blend of a show that does have strong main characters, and not a lot of them. It’s got four main characters. And that’s what the emphasis is. And oh yes, stuff blows up and every week there is a caper where you defeat the jerk of the week. But I think it’s mostly you watch these characters from week to week, and that’s what I enjoy. And that’s what appealed to me and that’s what keeps me interested in the show is it’s not really about the explosions, it’s about the people who are doing the explosions.

Q: Do you have a most memorable moment you’ve had from filming the seasons?

Campbell: For me, I’m just convinced one day that some bystander’s going to shoot me with a gun. And the reason why I say that is because my character Sam has a rifle with a scope and often he’s up on high rises and overpasses taking potshots at people. And sometimes you can’t see the crew connected to me, because they put me sometimes far away. And Miami has a lot of guns, and so I’m just afraid some do-gooder’s going to see me up there firing away and they’re going to save Miami from that criminal. And then Burn Notice will have three main characters.

Q: Have you ever been approached or are you ever going to direct any episodes of Burn Notice yourself?

Campbell: I’ve never really discussed it officially or had it posed to me. I’ve directed television in the past, but I think in this case it’s really, I’m in a fun situation where Jeffrey Donovan and Gabrielle and everyone, we have a good relationship and I’m kind of a bossy director and I’m not sure if it’s right for television. So I think I’m just going to step back. We have a good group of guys that’s come in and out now of men and women who have directed some really good episodes. So I think I’m just going to get out of the way and be a good little actor boy.

Q: Carla has been the main archenemy on Burn Notice this season. Is there going to be anyone else beyond her, her boss, perhaps, or another arch villain coming into the picture?

Campbell: I think I’m allowed to say very likely. Very likely. Everyone has a boss, so I think the season will prove no different. Because Michael’s being manipulated by someone who might be manipulated by someone. You never know. I think the layers are going to get deeper this season and it will start to get to the point where something’s gotta give.

Q: Burn Notice started out with being just that, Michael was burned. And then we go into now someone’s trying to kill him. How much further, what else could possibly happen?

Campbell:
It’s going to get bad because it’s not only you that they’re after, meaning Michael Westen, but they’re after friends and family. They want them all. And so we’re going to get into kind of a no mercy situation that I think is going to be very interesting and fun for people to watch. And it’s really been great; Jeffrey Donovan has some absolutely wonderful tour de force stuff. He’s just so good for the show because he’s an animal; he’s a really intense actor and he can hold up for a whole season, which is a lot of work for him. And it’s good, these next episodes kind of let them strut his stuff. And incidentally, the first episode back was written and directed by Matt Nix who created the show. I think this is his first television foray and I think he did a great job. It’s a really cool opening show.

Well there'a a whole lot more but I don't have room for it all. Remember to tune in tonight to watch the Mid-Season Premiere of Burn Notice tonight at 10/9 c on USA.

You can also see this review over at The Exception Mag.

Let’s just get this out of the way right now, Slumdog Millionaire is one of the Best movies I’ve seen this year. In fact to say it's one of this year's best is an understatement because the fact its it's one of the best movies I've seen in several years. There’s a reason its at the top of everyone’s Best of List, it’s one of the most poignant love stories I’ve seen in a long time. Now that that’s out of the way let move on to the review.

Most directors have a certain niche, Wes Anderson does quirky character driven dramadies, Robert Altman made movies with large ensemble casts, Quentin Tarantino makes ultra-violent films with lots of talking, and Uwe Boll consistently makes worthless drivel. Then there are that have two categories of movies, like Steven Spielberg who usually makes big blockbusters or smaller character films. But there aren’t many like Danny Boyle. Boyle seems to jump all over the map, be it a drama about drug addicts (Trainspotting), an adventure thriller (The Beach), one of the best zombie flicks of the last decade (28 Days Later) an incredible small character drama (Millions (A Must See)) or a special effects laden sci-fi movie (Sunshine), all his movies seem to have only one thing in common, how different they all are.

With Slumdog Millionaire he switches gears yet again and brings us the story of one man’s life and his one true love. As the movie opens we find out that Jamal is one question away from winning 20 million rubies on India’s “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.” We also quickly learn that he’s in police custody as they think him a cheat. But why would anyone think a smart kid winning on a game show is a big deal? Because Jamal is a nobody, he was orphaned as a small child and was forced to steal and con his way through life on the streets as a young boy. Now Jamal has gone straight and works serving tea at a phone center (you know the place your call goes to when you call any customer service number in the states) but he’s still just a kid from the slums in the eyes of the public. And if a doctor or lawyer can’t make it past 20,000 rubies how can a kid with no formal education win the top prize.

And so Jamal begins to tell his life story and how each small part of it has lead him to the answers. But the movie is much more than just questions and answers it is also a one of a kind love story between Jamal and Latika, and the story of how different two brothers can be and yet still care for each other. The movie is simple, but it works so well in it’s simplicity. It’s a simple plot device that works well to effectively tell a beautiful story.

All of the actors so a phenomenal job but the movie really lies on the shoulders of Dev Patel, who portrays the older Jamal, and draws the audience in and makes them care for Jamal.
And I be remiss if I did not at least mention how beautiful the movie is. Shot in India the movie is filled with the most beautiful landscapes and shots. It says something that even in the dirty, filthy slums one can see a semblance of beauty. Anthony Dod Mantle’s cinematography combines perfectly with the music by A.R. Rahman to make a rich feast for the senses.

As I said before this movie has been on almost everyone’s Best of Lists for the year and I think there’s a reason for that. It’s because the movie brings out the “best of” the human emotions. It’s a movie about compassion, love, and hope. It’s about the love between soul mates and the love for a brother who constantly fails you. But mostly it’s a movie about hope, hope that you can be with the one you love, hope that people can change, and above all hope that you can rise above your circumstances.

And I think it’s this hope that leaves you feeling so good when you walk out of the film (although the dance number during the credits doesn’t hurt either). The movie leaves you with a feeling that you too can be a better person, can rise above your circumstances, and show compassion for others. For this reason it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen these past few years.

Slumdog Millionaire is based on the book Q&A by Vikas Swarup, it’s in stores now under the movies title. I recommend you pick up the book if you enjoy the movie, or even before you see the movie.

Hey gang,
Are you a fan of Ash and his battle against the evil dead?
Do you love that jerk in Hitch who rats him out?
Are you a fan of that guy who inexplicably shows up in all the Spider-Man movies?
Did you love the canceled before it's time series Touching Evil and it's leading man?
Maybe you just love the new USA series that stars both of the actors who played these parts.

Well no matter why you love Bruce Campbell and Jeffrey Donovan if you've ever wanted to ask them a burning question here's your chance:

I'm doing an interview with the stars of USA's hit series Burn Notice this coming Monday at noon. So send along your questions by 10am on Monday morning and I'll try to get them answered. I know it's not a lot of time, but I'm lazy and just now posting this, so send 'em fast.

The 3rd season of Psych returns tonight with Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dule Hill) taking on their most "inhuman case" of all time. Inhuman in that the victim is a Sea Lion! But not just any Sea Lion, no it's Santa Barbara's beloved Shabby the Sea Lion. When Gus drags Shawn along to the funeral he quickly comes to fear that foul play is involved and in a flash the two are on the case, which leads them into something far more dangerous than a dead animal! The episodes even features a guest appearance from "the show killer" himself Ted McGinley, lets hope he doesn't kill this one!

I got a chance to see the episode early and I can tell you it's classic Shawn and Gus. The episode is of course an intriguing mystery but also combines the humor that we've come to love from these two goofy detectives. Plus the episode once again gives us hope that there might be more than friendship in the future for Shawn and the beautiful Juliet (Maggie Lawson).

The rest of season three will bring us some big names guest stars T including Cybill Shepherd ("Cybill," "The L Word") returning as Shawn's mom, Rachael Leigh Cook ("She's All That," "The Babysitter's Club") reprising her role as the one that got away from earlier in the season, Mykelti Williamson ("August Rush," "Lucky Number Slevin") and Jonathan Silverman ("The Single Guy," "Weekend At Bernies"). And the third season ends with a serial killer and a shocking twist!!!! I don't know about you but I can't wait to see what happens next for these two.

And if all that's not enough for you you can head on over to the Official Site. There you can play along with "Shawn’s Nickname Generator" and even check out the cast’s yearbook photos in PSYCH Yearbook Superlatives." As always, PSYCH fans can watch new "Psych-Outs," view full episodes, read writer commentary on each episode and play fun games featuring their favorite fake psychic detective.

And immediately preceding Psych at 9/8c you can catch an all new episode of Monk as it's penultimate season returns with Tony Shaloub's award winning portrayal of OCD detective Adrian Monk. Tonight's episode, which I can't wait to see tonight, introduces us to Monk's delinquent half-brother, Jack Jr. (Steve Zahn) who escapes from prison and breaks into Monk's apartment where he manipulates Monk into helping him find the person he claims framed him for murder.

Also this season Monk gets involved with a case straight out of "Encyclopedia Brown," Monk must solve a disappearance while trying to keep the parking garage where his wife was killed from being demolished, Monk matches wits with a magician (Steve Valentine) who has the ability to make evidence disappear; and when a childhood bully (Noah Emmerich) who terrorized Monk hires the detective to trail his wife, whom he suspects of infidelity, Monk relishes the opportunity to prove him right -- and things get even sweeter when the bully is accused of murder. And this all leads up to Monk's 8th and final season which is coming this summer.

And over at Monk's official site you can check out the all-new “OCD Video Trivia” game, which allows users to view screengrabs from the show and try to guess what isn’t quite right. Fans can get involved with the “Monk Lookalike Contest” by sending in their best Monk lookalikes and vote on the uncanniest resemblance. Full episodes are always available to watch online, including both classic and new episodes, along with weekly podcasts with cast, writer commentary and new quizzes.

So tune in tonight then head back here to tell me what you think of the episodes.

Copy this list, go to your own blog, paste this and put x's next to the films you've seen, add them up, change the header adding your number, and click post at the bottom. Have fun.

BBC Announced today that little known 26 year old actor Matt Smith will be the 11th Doctor following David Tennant's departure at the end of this year.

I was a bit concerned at first, but after watching the interview from BBC's Doctor Who Confidential I'm a bit intrigued. (I've posted it below) I'm curious what he will bring to the role.

As for Tennant I will miss him greatly, but I'm glad we've had 3 series (the the upcoming specials) with such an amazing Doctor.

Well I was planning on starting a new phase of my blog today but it's a pretty big undertaking and I'm about to start a new job (as is my wife) so I'm putting it on hold for a few weeks. I still plan on doing it, it's just going to be a little while.

Also I wanted to share a little video with you. Apparently I'm not the only one in the CineManiac household who enjoys watching USA's Psych. Here's my 11 month old son watching the theme song and dancing:

And remember Psych returns to USA on January 9th 10/9c with all new episodes right after a new Monk.
