A couple of years a show that was near and dear to my heart was placed on the chopping block and didn't make it off.  This was one of the most well written, smartly funny, mysterious, and just all around best shows on television at the time and to see it canceled was heart-breaking.  That show was of course, Veronica Mars.  The show introduced me to the greatness of Rob Thomas (No relation) and of course the beauty of Kristin Bell, a crush that remains to this day.  But tonight the great Rob Thomas returns to television with another fast paced, hilarious show: Starz' "Party Down."

The show centers on a catering team, called Party Down, that’s based in Los Angeles, which means most of them, are of course struggling actors.  And when you put that many self-conscious, self-centered people together hilarity is almost guaranteed.  The show is a whose-who of the funniest, if not so well known, actors of our time.  Ken Marino (Veronica Mars, The State), as Ron, the leader, Martin Starr (Freaks & Geeks, Adventureland) as Roman, the DJ/ resident film geek, Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield, Tru Blood) is Casey, the server whose marriage is falling apart, Ryan Hansen (Veronica Mars) is Kyle, the up-&-coming actor/model, Jane Lynch (Role Models) is Constance, the one whose been through it all, and Adam Scott (Step-Brothers) is Henry, the “prodigal-bartender” who returns to Party Down after his promising acting career falls apart.

Each episode focuses on one job be it a party for a Homeowners Association or a septuagenarian single mixer.  And the show, while scripted, feels improvised, which makes it feel more realistic.  I’ve been sick for the last two weeks, so unfortunately I’ve only had a chance to watch the first of the two episodes I was sent.  But the pilot is hilarious.

In the first episode we are introduced to everyone at the aforementioned Homeowners Association party.  We are introduced to Henry as he shows up for his first gig with PD in several years.  And it’s soon clear that he’s not a fan of Ron, who is oblivious to his own racist comments and has surprisingly humble dreams.  We quickly learn that Casey is a comedian whose husband wants her to give up on her dream and move away from California.  Meanwhile Constance is giving Kyle pointers on how to score a role on ‘Pacific Palisades’ which is clearly a spoof of The O.C.

And the great thing about the episode, and hopefully the series, it that it focuses on the issues of the people they are serving almost as much as the servers themselves.  In this episode we get to see the great Enrico Colantoni (Mr. Mars on Veronica Mars) have a mid-life crisis during his wife’s party.  Meanwhile his teenage daughter is hooking up with Kyle, whose clearly too old for her.  And everyone is trying to figure out how they know Henry.

I really think Thomas, along with fellow creators Paul Rudd, John Enbom, & Dan Ethridge, have a great show on their hands.  But be warned, it’s not for the kids, at all!  It’s on Starz where there can be all kinds of adult language and situations and they use it to their advantage.  But if you don’t mind those things, tune in tonight for the premiere, it’ll have you in stiches.

Hey gang Starz is continuing the success they had with their original series Crash by presenting 2 new original comedies that start this Friday, Party Down and Head Case.  I've seen the first episode of Party Down and it's hilarious (although not all ages appropriate!) and will have a review of it up soon.  In the mean time here's some info for you and a couple of widgets for the shows.

With Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas and Paul Rudd (I Love You Man) listed as the co-creators of the brand new half-hour comedy series “Party Down”, how could this show not be great? The new season of "Head Case" also promises to be a barrel of laughs as celebrity guest stars including Jerry Seinfeld and Hugh Hefner, pay a visit to Dr. Goode's (Alexandra Wentworth) couch for the first time.

Party Down (new show premieres Friday, March 20, 2009 at 10:30 PM ET/PT on Starz)
As employees of the L.A. catering company “Party Down,” a group of struggling dreamers who are stuck working for tips while waiting for their big break mingle with guests at everything from sweet sixteen parties to the most lavish Hollywood soirees. Ken Marino (Vinnie Van Lowe of Veronica Mars) is the team leader. Adam Scott (Tell Me You Love Me, Knocked Up) plays Henry, the failed actor who has returned to his old job at Party Down. Ryan Hansen (Dick Casablancas of Veronica Mars) plays an aspiring actor/model/rocker who likes to hit on ladies and wants to hit it big. Martin Starr (Bill Haverchuck of Freaks and Geeks) is Roman, a geeky screenwriter who thinks everyone who doesn’t get things like references to Repo Man are idiots. Jane Lynch (Best in Show, 40 Year Old Virgin) plays a woman who was once an actor who did bit parts, which she likes to talk about occasionally. She has a tendency to get too chummy with the guests at the parties. And finally Lizzy Caplan (Amy from True Blood, Cloverfield, Mean Girls) plays a comedian with marital problems who is constantly trying to resolve her issues with her husband while at work.

Head Case (new season premieres Friday, March 20, 2009 at 10 PM ET/PT on Starz)
Unapologetically frank, Dr. Elizabeth Goode (Alexandra Wentworth – “Live with Oprah,” “Seinfeld,” “In Living Color”) is not your average Hollywood therapist. She’s a tad judgmental, occasionally argumentative, but always committed to her uphill battle treating mental health within the entertainment industry. Celebrity guests who will appear as themselves include Jerry Seinfeld, Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, SNL™ alum Kevin Nealon, “Survivor” host Jeff Probst and Playboy’s™ Hugh Hefner with one time girlfriend Bridget Marquardt.

Being that these are pay-cable series, expect a fair amount of swearing, some nudity and other adult-oriented humor!

Gran Torino has been called the "Get off my lawn" movie by some (I don't have specific examples, but I bet someone somewhere called it that) and it's true Clint Eastwood, as Walt Kowalski, does say that exact line more than once.  But while Eastwood does play the crotchety old man with a bad attitude, the movie is about so much more than that.  The truth is Gran Torino is about redemption and change.  The movie asks the question "What does it take for a man, especially an old man set in his ways, to change? " And the answer is not necessarily the one you are expecting.

The movie opens with the funeral of Walt's wife.  We quickly learn that Walt is a short tempered man who doesn't take guff from anyone.  His two sons and their families can't stand him and can't wait to get away from him.  The local minister can't get Walt to talk to him (per Ms. Kowalski's wishes) unless he wants a mean word and a quip about his age.  And the fact that Walt's entire neighborhood has been slowly filling up with oriental immigrants doesn't make him any happier. Walt's new neighbors, which he refers to in very derogatory names, don't take care of their property and so the neighborhood has become a mess.  And it doesn't help matters that Walt fought in the Korean War, from which he brought back many prejudices.

When an altercation erupts between the neighbor boy, Thao and his cousin who wants him to join his gang Walt gets upset.  Not because the gang is messing with his neighbors, but because the lot of them are on his lawn.  So Walt pulls a shotgun and kicks them all off his lawn.  Soon the entire neighborhood is bringing Walt food and plants and looking at him as a hero, something he desperately wants to avoid.

But since I already told you the movie was about change you can probably guess what happens next, slowly Walt begins to care for his neighbors and appreciating their culture.  He slowly forms a special bound with Thao and his sister Sue, taking them on almost as surrogates to his own grandchildren.  He helps Thao get a job, a date, and become more of a man.

At the same time things with the gangs have begun to escalate.  First, Thao is robbed and beaten up, so Walt puts a good old fashion whuppin' on their biggest member.  But as the violence escalates those near Walt gets hurt and he knows he has to finish it before anyone else can get hurt.

I have to admit I avoided this movie for awhile, because while it looked good, it also looked like your typical drama, which can sometimes be tedious to watch.  But not only is Gran Torino not tedious, it's pretty hilarious.  The movie is one of the most genuinely funny movies I've seen in a long time.  Who knew Eastwood was such a comedian.  I throughly enjoyed this movie, and really think it's probably one of the better films to be released in 2008.

So what does it take for a man to change?  You'll have to ask yourself that after seeing the film.

To say this season of Burn Notice has been "Explosive" would be putting it mildly. The season started out with a huge explosion as someone set out to assassinate Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) and it seems like every episode has scene something blowing up, engulfed in flames, or being shot to hell. And the season finale (airing tonight at 10pm/9c) doesn't appear to let up one bit. And today to celebrate tonight's Season Finale we've got a lot of Burn Notice stuff for you to enjoy.

So if you're not up to date on this season (and shame on you if your not) you're probably wondering what's been going on. Well a whole lot. Sure Michael's still helping out those in need like a modern day Robin MacGuyver-Hood, but he's also been trying to discover just who burned him, and more recently why exactly someone is trying to kill him.

Well it turns out the man trying to kill him is someone Michael knows, a man named Victor (Michael Shanks). Viewers may remember Victor from way back in August when he and Michael worked together to steal the high powered rifle for Carla (Tricia Helfer). (If you can't remember Carla, well she's the woman who may or may not have burned Michael to force him to work for her covert organization.) Seems Victor was brought into Carla's employ in the same way as Michael and he wants someone to pay for it. So he's hellbent on taking out Carla and everyone who works for her. Which brings us to tonight's episode. in which Michael "learns some surprising facts about Victor's past, and is forced to take on Carla in a final showdown." I don't know about you but I'm ready to watch it right now!

So we need something to tide us over until tonight, luckily USA's got us covered with several things! First up there's the Covert Ops 2 Game! In which you can take part in a new daring mission and help Seymour retrieve a valuable microchip. And you could win some prizes so why not click on the banner below and get to playing (Right after you read the rest of this post of course!)

You can also check out the official Burn Notice Facebook page and talk to other fans and discuss theories about what's going on on the show

And if that's not enough I've got a few videos you can watch. First up a preview for tonight's episode, followed by 2 clips from the episode.

And last but not least you can read the complete interview with Tricia Helfer put on by USA and many of my fellow bloggers. I've posted a few snippets of it below and you can go here for the full interview.

So Don't Forget to watch the Burn Notice Season 2 Finale on Thursday, March 5th at 10pm/9c on USA NETWORK! In the explosive season finale, Michael learns some surprising facts about Victor's past, and is forced to take on Carla in a final showdown.

Sorry I realized I haven't done a quote in a while or posted the answer.  The last quote (on the 26th) was:

"Kate? It's Dr. Hallen, I'm still at the office... something's come up, I need you back here right away. No you've got to come back, Kate, there's a man here with some sort of a parasite on his arm, assimilating his flesh at a frightening speed. I may have to get ahead of it and amputate. No... I don't know what it is or where it came from."

From 1958's The Blob, one of the first horror movies I ever saw.  I remember watching it on TV while some of my mom's family was in town, sitting on the couch bed (I think with my cousin) and watching it.  That was a long time ago.

Today's quote is:
"I have stood on the sidelines of race relations long enough! I want to march down that field of oppression and kick that ball of bigotry right over the goalpost of intolerance! "

Enjoy!
