Another Friday night, another new episode of Party Down (and it's companion Head Case).  Tonight is the first season finale of both shows and they both look to be pretty amazing.  So guide the tv over to STARZ tonight at 10/9c.

First up is the finale of Head Case with guest star Jerry Seinfeld!  On the episode Seinfeld says he can't have sex with his wife unless they're pretending to be in the middle ages!  Seems like a bit too much info for me, but I guess that's the point of a therapist.  You can see a clip from the episode here .  And from there you should be able to see a few more, including the above mentioned Seinfeld scene.

Next up on my new favorite comedy series, Party Down, the beautiful and hilarious Kristen Bell guest stars as Uda Bengt, a former Party Down employee whose started her own catering business and hires the Party Down crew as extra help for a very important gig.  By all accounts this episode is supposed to be very funny, and I can't wait to watch it.  You can see a preview here.  And a clip here.

As excited as I am to watch tonight's episode of Party Down I'm super sad to have to wait until the next season starts up.  But seriously check it out, but not with the kids around.

The CW announced their new fall line-up today with four new series getting picked up, Melrose Place 2.0, which is the new Melrose Place, The Beautiful Life, about models, The Vampire Diaries, based on the books of the same name looks to cash in on the vampire love brought upon by Twilight and True Blood, and Parental Guidance Suggested, premiering midseason the series follows a young girl as she meets her biological parents.

For the most part the schedule isn't that different from this past year,  Gossip Girl & One Tree Hill retain Mondays nights, 90210 is now paired with Melrose Place on Tuesdays, The Beautiful Life goes to Wednesdays with Next Top Model, possibly the biggest change is Smallville moving to Fridays so that The Vampire Diaries can be teamed up with Supernatural on Thursdays.

Here's some info from the CW's Press Release:

On Monday, the powerhouse combination of GOSSIP GIRL and ONE TREE HILL will remain in place.  Last fall, this winning team made The CW the Number One network with women, and sent Monday night ratings up 118 percent in women 18-34. GOSSIP GIRL, which continues to be one of the most talked-about shows on television, will return to its 8:00-9:00 p.m. slot, followed by ONE TREE HILL from 9:00-10:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, 90210 returns for its sophomore season in the 8:00-9:00 p.m. timeslot.  Last season, 90210 gave The CW its highest-rated series premiere ever and improved the 8:00 p.m. time period by 35 percent in women 18-34.  The highly anticipated, updated version of the 1990s monster-hit drama MELROSE PLACE will premiere in the 9:00-10:00 p.m. timeslot.  The new MELROSE PLACE features a dynamic ensemble of up-and-coming stars, along with two original cast members reprising the roles they made famous: Laura Leighton as Sydney Andrews and Thomas Calabro as Dr. Michael Mancini. MELROSE PLACE promises to deliver all the backstabbing and sizzle of the original series.  And, as they did once before, 90210 and MELROSE PLACE will combine for a great night of television.

On Wednesday, AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL returns in its successful 8:00-9:00 p.m. timeslot, followed by the glamorous new drama THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE.  Last season, AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL ranked second in its time period with young women.  Tyra Banks is one of the few women who is seen regularly on both daytime and primetime television.  Beginning this fall, The CW’s daytime block will feature two hours of THE TYRA BANKS SHOW, with an encore episode from 3:00-4:00 p.m. and an original episode from 4:00-5:00 p.m.  AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL and THE TYRA BANKS SHOW provide perfect symmetry and a natural fit for The CW brand by targeting the same audience in both primetime and daytime.

New drama THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE joins TOP MODEL on Wednesdays.  From producers Ashton Kutcher, Jason Goldberg, Karey Burke, Mike Kelley and Carol Barbee, the fashion-based series gives viewers an exciting, behind-the-scenes glimpse at the cutthroat world of a group of young, beautiful and very sexy models living together in a models’ residence in New York City.  The show features a stunning ensemble cast, featuring Sara Paxton (“Last House on the Left”), Mischa Barton (“The O.C.”) and supermodel Elle Macpherson (“Friends”).  Together, AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL and THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE will be television’s most fashionable night.

Thursdays go Goth with the new teaming of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES from 8:00-9:00 p.m., followed by SUPERNATURAL in the 9:00-10:00 p.m. hour.  Based on the best-selling series of books, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES is the story of two vampire brothers obsessed with the same beautiful girl, and battling to control the fate of an entire town.  Starring Nina Dobrev (“DeGrassi: The Next Generation”), Paul Wesley (“Mad Men”), Ian Somerhalder (“Lost”) and Steven R. McQueen (“Everwood”), THE VAMPIRE DIARIES makes the perfect new lead-in to SUPERNATURAL.  Last season,SUPERNATURAL’s Winchester brothers gave the network ratings growth across key young demos, despite the highly competitive timeslot.

Big changes are in store on Fridays when SMALLVILLE relocates to the 8:00-9:00 p.m. hour, bringing young viewers from Thursday into Friday nights.  With non-stop action and classic DC Comics characters from Lois Lane to Doomsday, SMALLVILLE continues to give loyal viewers the stories and characters they love.

The heartwarming and humorous drama PARENTAL DISCRETION ADVISEDwill premiere midseason.  From writer/producer Liz Tigelaar, (“Brothers and Sisters”),PARENTAL DISCRETION ADVISED is the story of a young girl who finds her biological parents and how that discovery changes all their lives.  The show stars Britt Robertson (“Swingtown”), Kristoffer Polaha (“Mad Men”), Shiri Appleby (“E.R.”) and Kerr Smith (“Eli Stone”).

As we all know Jay Leno is leaving the Tonight Show next week to take over NBC's 10pm slot.  So with Leno out, Conan is heading in to take his place after a few months away from late night.  Well Conan has a message for all of you fans that I felt I should pass along:

And for a bit of Behind the scenes fun here's Conan's right hand man, Andy Richter:

And if you really want to be there for Conan's first show with Pearl Jam and Will Ferrell here's your chance.  Simple head on over here. And anser some no-skills trivia questions for a chance to win two tickets to the SOLD OUT premiere of Conan’s first show.  The contest runs for the next two weeks, with one pair of tickets being given away each week!

Good Luck on winning some tickets and Good Luck to Conan in his new home at the Tonight Show.

Another Tuesday another exciting day of new releases.  This week brings a pretty good selection including Terminator 2 (Skynet Edition) on Blu-Ray, Fanboys only on DVD (boo), Tom Cruise's Nazi movie, and that first mall cop movie.  So what do I think you should pick up?  Well read on and find out.

Fanboys

This site and Fanboys have a long history (See Here, Here, Here, Here, Here, and the review Here.) and I for one can’t wait for work to end so I can run out to Best Buy and pick this one up.  I don’t know what the special features are on the disc (as I never got a copy for review) but I’m guessing since the Weinsteins are dropping this one on DVD only (Where’s the HD love???) that it won’t be much.  I really don’t know why a company would put as much money into a movie as they did Fanboys and treat it as horribly as they did.  The movie never got a proper wide release (I don’t think it ever played in more than 100 theaters at a time) and so I assume the DVD is pretty bare bones.

Which is sad, because I’d love to see a Blu-ray with both versions of the film (both Cancer and non-cancer) and some of the R rated stuff they filmed.  Overall I’m sure I’ll be pretty disappointed with the content on the DVD.  But at least I’ll have a really amazing movie, which is perfect for anyone as geeky as I am.

True Blood: Season 1

Another hit in last year’s popular vampire trend.  A really good show with an intriguing mystery (who’s killing all the vampire lovers?) set in a world where vampires have recently revealed they exist and are just trying to have the same rights as everyone else.  Season 2 starts on HBO in June, but you can catch up now that Season 1 is on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Valkyrie

The latest Tom Cruise Mission:Impossible movie is not technically a Mission:Impossible movie, but instead a historical tale of the Nazi’s who tried to kill Hitler and ultimately failed.  A good action/thriller with lots of great actor’s playing German’s without those lousy German accents. Special Features Include 2 commentaries and 7 featurettes.

Terminator 2: Skynet Edition

All you need to know is that it’s Terminator 2 in HD, right?  Ok here’s some more details on one of the best sci-fi/action movies of the past 25 years: The disc includes multiple THX-certified versions of the film in HD and these special features: Picture-in-picture of behind the scenes video, text commentaries and multimedia galleries, Storyboard-script mode – view storyboards and read the script while watching the film, Interactive quizzes and games, BD-Live enabled, featuring games, extra content and more for internet-connected players, Audio commentary with 26 cast and crew members, Audio commentary with director James Cameron and co-writer William Wisher, Enhanced for D-Box Motion Control Systems, Includes THX Optimizer

My Bloody Valentine 3D

3D Horror (sadly not the new Real 3D which is not yet available on TVs) brought to you in high-def.  You already know if you want this one.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Ok this movie is really quite hilarious.  It’s one of those stupid movies you think you’ll probably only watch once, maybe twice, but it’s so funny you end up buying it and watching over and over.  So do yourself a favor and pick it up.  It’s good for the whole family and quite clean.  Kevin James is fantastic and the entire supporting cast does a great job.

And here's a few recent releases I've missed in the last couple of weeks:

S. Darko

A sequel to Donnie Darko?  Was anyone really screaming for this film to be made?  Especially without the original films principal cast, or writer/director?  Apparently someone was, and now we can all own it on Blu-ray and DVD.  I’ll admit, I haven’t had a chance to watch this one yet, and I’m a little intrigued.  Mainly I’m intrigued at how bad the movie will likely turn out to be, but part of me is rooting for it to be good, although based on current reviews that doesn’t seem likely.

In the film, Samantha Darko now eighteen, and her rebellious best-friend Corey set out on a cross-country road-trip to follow their Hollywood dreams but are cut short when their water pump explodes outside a small town in Utah.  After an unexplained meteorite crash-lands in the town, Samantha begins to be plagued by bizarre dreams warning her of the universe’s imminent end.  Now, she must decipher between blurred fantasy and reality, face the demons she fled back home, and attempt to save both the world and herself from the ultimate destruction.  Featuring a filmmakers’ commentary, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes and more.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture Trilogy

With the new Star Trek picture in theaters it was a perfect time to release the older films on Blu-ray and this package is really all I may ever need of the old films.  The “Trilogy” refers to films II, III, & IV (also known as The Wrath of Kahn, The Search for Spock, and The Voyage Home) and although I never thought of it before, it really is a trilogy.  Each film picks up just after the last finished and really tells one complete story.  But maybe the best part is that this set features II & IV together, which are hands down the best in the series. So for anyone who wants some of the old films, but not all the crappy ones (Read odd numbered films) this might be a good buy for you.  Yes III isn’t one of the best, but most places have this priced at around $45 which is about the price of two movies on Blu-Ray so basically you get III for free!

One of the best parts of all this though is that Khan has been completely remastered and all 3 films are in beautiful HD.  So if you either can’t afford the box set with all of the original films, or you’re not a big enough Trekkie to warrant buying them all, this sets is for you.

Taken

When is a summer movie, not a summer movie? When it comes out in January, kills at the box office, and remakes Liam Neeson into an action star.  That movie is Taken, one of the best action movies to hit screens in a long, long time.  You can read my full review here.

In the movie Neeson’s ex Special Agent goes after the men who kidnapped his daughter.  And when I saw you don’t want to mess with this guy’s daughter I mean it.  He leaves behind a bloody trail of destruction, stopping at nothing to get his daughter back.  I loved this movie, and now with the new extended cut you can enjoy it for a bit longer.

Also available single DVD or 2 disc DVD, the Blu-ray Special Features include:  Coomentary with the Director, Writer, and Cinematogpaphers, a Making of Featurette, Side by Side comparisons of several scenes, and more.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

One of the greatest westerns of all time is now out on Blu-ray.  This sprawling epic stars Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach, respectively, as the title trio.  A movie full of double crosses, dirty dealings, confederate soldiers, and some amazing gun play.  If you haven’t seen the extended cut, you haven’t seen this movie.  And it looks amazing in HD!

Special Features include Commentary from Film Historian Richard Schickel, Commentary from Christopher Frayling, several featurettes including: Leones West, Leones Style, The Man Who Lost the Civil War, Reconstructing “TG, TB, & TU”, the two part Il Maestro, Deleted Scenes, and Easter Eggs.

Big

This is one of those classic 80s films.  If you don’t already know what Big is, than you’ve been living under a rock for the last 2 decades.  This new HD transfer features both the theatrical version and the extended cut.  And anytime you’re throwing more of Tom Hanks in funny mode my way I’m gonna be excited about that.

Special Features include: Commentary:  “Big Brainstorming” – A Audio Documentary by Gary Ross & Anne Spielberg, Deleted Scenes,, several featurettes including: Zoltar Easter Egg, “Big” Beginnings, Chemistry of a Classic, The Work of Play, Hollywood Backstory: Big, and Carnival Party Newswrap

 There's Something About Mary

This movie was hilarious when it first came out, with lots of gross-out, shocking humor.  But I've never thought it was as funny as that first viewing, mainly because if it doesn't catch you off guard it's just not as funny.  And so although it was a bit ahead of its time (just look at all the R rated comedies we have today) it just feels a bit flat these days.

Special Features include an extended cut, deleted scenes, 3 commentaries, and several featurettes.

Fargo

Fargo follows a man (William H. Macy) who hires two bumbling hitmen to kill his wife, and the pregnant police woman (Francis McDormand) whose on the case.  I will admit I watched this movie years ago, after it first one all those awards, and I hated it.  But since then I’ve fallen for the Coen Brothers and everyone tells me I need to give this one another try.  So I look forward to trying it out again. Special Features include Commentary by the DP, Roger A Deakins, an article from American Cinematogropher, and so called “Minnesota Nice” and “Trivia Nice”.

So this weekend the chatter on the interwebs is all about the pickups of "bubble" series Castle, Dollhouse, and Chuck (among others).  Now a few weeks ago I soapboxed it up with my mini-rant on the outdated process by which "ratings" are calculated, and finally it seems the networks are realizing this as well.  Because let's face it most networks would have canceled these 3 shows, especially Dollhouse, based on ratings alone.  Luckily someone higher up seems to be looking at the fanbase, potential DVD and online episode sales, merchandising, online viewing revenue (think Hulu.com), etc and not just the Neilsen Ratings.

And it's about Gorram time someone woke up and did just that.  Now it's known that both Chuck & Dollhouse were brought back with the stipulation that their budgets would be cut, which makes sense in our economic times.  But I'm confident the people behind the shows will find ways to keep the shows just as amazing with less money.  In fact Dollhouse has already filmed an unaired 13th episode set in the future on a much smaller budget than they had for the aired episodes. (as for why it had something to do with Fox nixing the original pilot and opting to air just 12 episodes and the DVD commitment being 13 episodes)  and by most accounts the episodes is phenominal.

Also most of the series have gotten a smaller episode commitment (thing 13 rather than a full 22) but hopefully some of these shows will do well enough to get a back-9 pickup.

So does this mean more networks will be looking to things other than ratings in the future?  It's doubtful, but hopefully this next season can show what happens when you do just that.  And hopefully it will work out well for all the series involved.  And if it does work out, than maybe we can start putting the Neisen's behind us and find a new way to track just how many people are watching shows and catching those all important ads that fund our favorite series.

Hey gang, so I've been really digging this new show on Starz called Party Down.  I've mentioned it here a couple of time, but I don't think I've told you just how good it is.  Now I must warn while it's hilarious, it does run on pay cable and so it's got quite a bit of language and the occasional nudity, so be warned.

Now the series comes from the minds behind one of my favorite shows ever, Veronica Mars, and features a ton of cameos from the old cast of that show.  (Kristen Bell is actually appearing in next weeks finale!) One of the minds behind the show is also one of my favorite actors around, the wonderfully talented Paul Rudd.

The show is one of the funniest shows on TV right now and a lot of it is improvised.  In fact it's funny enough that it just got picked up for a second season!  You can check it out on Starz website, Netflix On Demand, and of course the Starz network.

I just got some info about this week's Party Down and its companion show, Head Case, that I wanted to pass along.  So here's some clips for the shows.

On Head Case (10p E/P), Dr. Goode treats WWE star Dave Batista and talks sex with Sex & The City's Jason Lewis .

On Party Down (10:30p E/P) Ron caters his own high school reunion (which is weird because my Starz contact's is this weekend and mine is in a couple of weeks and neither of us is going). Plus Bobbie St. Brown(Jennifer Coolidge) makes her debut grabbing destiny by the balls.

Enjoy the clips and seriously check it out on Star tomorrow night or their website or Netflix.
